What is Zoom Professional whitening?

Zoom teeth whitening is a type of bleaching that whitens the enamel and dentin of the teeth.  Zoom whitening uses a whitening gel that is activated by a special light. Hydrogen Peroxide is the active ingredient in the whitening gel.  When activated, oxygen is able to enter the tooth’s enamel and dentin where it bleaches discoloured areas without any harm to the teeth.

What is the process like?

The first step is to have an updated oral exam. Your dental professional will let you know if you are a suitable candidate.  The majority of patients are able to have this treatment without any issue. Your dentist or dental hygienist will determine the current shade of your teeth and will decide with you which of the lighter shades you desire for the end result. The two methods of teeth whitening that are used are in-office whitening and take-home whitening.

The in-office whitening procedure takes a little over an hour to complete. At the end of the whitening treatment, dental fluoride is applied to the teeth for about five minutes. This helps to strengthen the tooth’s enamel and helps to minimize any sensitivity. The in-office procedure uses a higher concentration of the whitening gel. As a result, usually only one application is needed for most patients.

The take-home whitening procedure involves the use of custom-made whitening trays that are worn in the comfort of your home. Whitening trays are required to be worn for between four to eight hours with each application of whitening gel. Your dentist or dental hygienist will assess your oral condition and advise you on how many hours you should wear the tray for each application. While you can wear the gel trays during the day, most patients prefer to wear them at night while sleeping. This option uses a lower concentration of the whitening gel so it is safe for home use. You can usually expect your teeth to be up to 6 shades whiter with the take-home whitening option.

How long does treatment take?

Depending on the amount of stain present, it may take more than one visit to complete the in-office whitening process.  For the take-home whitening option, it usually takes approximately three applications.  Your dental professional will advise you on how many in-office visits or take-home applications will be needed, to help you get the look you want.
